Just to clarify a point, these instructions are slightly different for
outlook 2003, as it has added an additional level of menus for the view
menu (you must go through the "arrange" submenu).

Also, it may be easier just to pick the pre-defined view of "active
appointments", which works just as well.  You could even choose the
"customize current view" afterwards if you wanted it slightly different.
