Backing up the hard drive

Good evening list, 

Last week my computer stopped booting up.  It would start and hang up with just 
a black screen.  With some help we determined that Window was missing some DLL 
files.  I don't want to go through that again.  I was sure I had lost all my 
programs and would have to re-install them.  

running Windows XP Home, using Jaws 8 or 10 is it possible to back up the 
entire hard drive onto an external hard drive, if yes how would I do that?
