A question about the XP start menu

Hello everyone and happy new year:
A friend of mine is finally seeing the light and moving over to the XP start
menu. One bizarre thing that he's seeing is that whenever he opens a program,
it's pinned to his start menu until he goes up with the aps key and says remove
from this list. Would anyone know the deal? The other thing is that every so
often Jaws 9 states his build of XP Pro, which is strange.
