8 not setting row & column titles

I'm using XP pro with Office pro 2000. No matter which way I tried to set
row & column titles, it will not stick. The insert v methods
NOR hot keys like control, shift, insert "C" will not set column titles.
Is this just me? Version 7 has no problem.
