Haven't been following this thread so far so sorry if I'm repeating
anything. Officially thunderbird doesn't claim accessibility via msaa so
no particular reason why it should work. What version are you using? You
might get on better with the version 3 betas which are updated
regularly, try it, if it doesn't work try again a couple of weeks later.
Also try it with nvda as its development is more closely aligned with
the mozilla suite than the big 3 screenreaders. For jaws try switching
off the quick nav keys in the verbosity options to see if this prevents
your problem.

Frequently, even in the middle of typing a message, in Thunderbird or in
edit boxes, Jaws starts acting as if it were looking at a web page with
short-cut keys, instead of simply writing a message.
For example, with this message, I typed the first A and Jaws said, "No
anchors on this page", then the L produced "No lists on this page."
The only cure is to restart Jaws, or, (as I've done here,) write the
message in Wordpad and paste it into the message.
Any ideas? Is it my particular version of Jaws?
