Well, try looking under control panel>sounds and audio devices>sounds page and
check if you have the Windows default sound scheme selected.
Another easy way around problems when one is stuck is to restore your system to
an earlier point when it worked fine. I find it really helpful with those pest
like problems which you have no idea why they started or why all of a sudden
they went away if you are lucky enough that is. If you decide to give system
restore a go then head to start menu>all programs>accessories>system
tools>system restore and follow the on screen prompts.
