necessary? .. depends on the relative timing of things. If scsisoftusb does its work before all the paths are fully set up, then it won't find the hide file.
It may be that inclusion of current modules in rom breaks this timing.. it wasn't something specifically checked prior to release - hence giving it a kick once ready for use can be rather helpful. (If you were previously softloading things, then they would be effectively kicked fairly late in the boot sequence)
