Subject: [insightsa] email from Simon Wong regarding cyclists on
footpaths
Hi Elina, thanks for your email. As you may be aware, I'm a keen
participant of the tandem project as part of the Euride Mercedes
Adelaide Racing Cycling Club and we do road tandem cycling as a
sport. We do a great deal of training and participate in various
organised racing events on the road. The front riders/pilots we
have are all highly competent and experienced cyclists, so guess
they are unlikely to require riding on footpaths to avoid
potentially dangerous traffic conditions.
For your information, Guide Dogs SA/NT runs a life skills camp
for young people once a year and introduction to tandem cycling
is often a feature of the program.
RSB used to run a tandem cycling group of which I was a part but
the group has not been active for some two years now; some people
still have loan of RSB tandem bikes.
Personally, as a vision impaired person, I do feel nervous about
the idea of everyone legally having the right to ride bikes on
footpaths whenever they like to do so. While walking in the
presence of traffic and environmental noise, I find I often
cannot hear them coming at all until they whizzed pass, and I get
startled every time. I read an article recently that the year
long Queensland trial has shown allowing cyclists to ride on
footpaths has not resulted in an increase in
collisions/accidents, which is good to know, but I guess many
people with vision impairment will probably feel rather nervous
about it for a period of time.
Kind regards, Simon
