If you live in New York, Here is a way for you to fund the acquisition of assistive technology such as accessible music technology from Dancing Dots. The Equipment Loan Fund for the Disabled is a low interest loan program that was set up by the New York State legislature to help any disabled New Yorker to make purchases that can help to alleviate or overcome their disability. The maximum loan amount is $4000, and the minimum is $500. The interest rate is currently at 4%, and the loan can be paid back over a period of from 2 to 8 years. If one borrows the maximum amount for the maximum time, payments are about $50 per month. If you are eligible for services from the Commission for the Blind or any other agency, you should avail yourselves of those services first. However, consider this source of funding as an alternative. It is not a vocational program. That is, if equipment acquired with the loan will improve the quality of your life, you may very well be eligible for funding. See information below and the application form attached. Equipment Loan Fund For The Disabled; The New York State Office of Children and Family Services' Equipment Loan Fund for the Disabled can help you purchase equipment that will improve the quality of your daily life. Who Can Get A Loan? Disabled residents of New York State are eligible. Money is loaned either directly to the disabled person or to another person responsible to that individual. What Types Of Disabilities Qualify? Persons with a wide range of mental or physical disabilities may qualify under this program. A New York State licensed physician must certify that the individual is disabled. What Equipment is Covered? Equipment that assists the disabled person to overcome barriers of daily living is covered. Some examples are: Wheelchairs, wheelchair van lifts, ramps, communication devices for the deaf and hearing impaired, prosthetic devices, and devices which allow persons who are blind or visually impaired to discern printed material.
