While WABC, formerly known as "WABC, Music Radio 77," in New York City will present its annual "Rewound" program, Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th, 2009,the program, featuring past airchecks of WABC air personalities from the 1960's through the early '80's, will be relegated to WABC's web stream at: www.wabcradio.com and WPLJ-F.M's HD3 channel, where WABC is usually simulcast. While it istrue that many people will be able to listen to "Rewound" via the internet, the truth is, WABC was an "institution" in New York City radio, in its "Music Radio" days. We listened to "Music Radio 77" on the A.M. radio dial and listeners should have that privilege, again, as the talk programming, which WABC airs will, most likely, be reruns, Memorial Day, anyway. Also, not everyone has access to the internet which could very well getoverloaded, given the popularity of the "Rewound" special, which could makeit impossible for some to access the WABC web site. Also, it is sad this change is occurring, since the history buffs who arrange the show have new content this year. WABC didn't retain its old airchecks and music, after switching to its talk format, in May, 1982.Could this be the final "Rewound" special, while there's no factual evidence to say it will be the last "Rewound" special, WABC has parted ways with itsformer Program Director, Phil Boyce, whose pet project was, you guest it, "Rewound." Only time will tell.
