            MEMBERSHIP
Call for Nominations for the Board of Directors
Board elections for ASTC will take place in mid-August, and the
ASTC Nominating Committee welcomes your suggestions for candidates. Eligible
candidates must be the designated representative of a Governing Member
institution. Board members are elected to three-year terms, and officers to
one-year terms; all may be re-elected for an additional term as well. If you
wish to propose a candidate or express interest yourself, please contact Donna
McMillan, dmcmillan@xxxxxxxxx Please submit nominations by July 5.

Nominations Invited for Fellow Award for Outstanding Contribution
ASTC's highest award, the Fellow Award for Outstanding
Contribution, is awarded to individuals who have performed exemplary service to
the field and furthered the public engagement in science. The award often
recognizes outstanding dedication over the course of the recipient's entire
career. Nominees do not have to be from ASTC member institutions. Last year
there was no award given; in 2009 Bonnie VanDorn, ASTC's retiring executive
director, was honored. Lesley Lewis (Ontario Science Centre), chair of the
Nominating Committee, invites members to submit letters of nomination to Donna
McMillan, dmcmillan@xxxxxxxxx For details and citations of previous awardees,
visit www.astc.org/about/awards/awards.htm. Please submit nominations by July 5.

            PUBLICATIONS
            New Book Available
In Their Own Voices by Minda Borun, Barbara M. Kelly and Lisa Jo
Rudy is the story of 13 families from the African American, Latino, and Asian
communities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey, who have been
actively involved in grant-funded outreach programs for nearly two decades. The
collection is a surprisingly candid and moving portrait of the significant role
that these programs can play in the lives of local families. The programs,
funded primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), are the work of the
Philadelphia/Camden Informal Science Education Collaborative (PISEC) -- The
Franklin Institute, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Academy for Aquatic
Sciences, and the Philadelphia Zoo, working with 10 community partner agencies.

The book complements an earlier publication, still available
electronically as a .PDF, Family Learning in Museums: The PISEC Perspective.
This book looks at family groups in four science museums and summarizes the
results of a four-year, NSF-funded R & D project.

Visit www.astc.org/pubs/borun.htm for more information or to
download an order form. In Their Own Voices costs $15 for ASTC members, $19 for
nonmembers, plus shipping and handling. Family Learning is available to ASTC
members for $8 and to nonmembers for $10.

            PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

            Earth Science Week, October 9-15
Science centers, museums, and other informal learning institutions
will be joining schools again this October in celebrating Earth Science Week,
the annual event that promotes learning about the earth sciences and
responsible stewardship of the Earth. Focusing on the theme "Our Ever-Changing
Earth," Earth Science Week 2011 (October 9-15) will engage young people and the
public in studying the natural processes that shape our planet over time.

Free resources and activities will show how evidence of change can
be found everywhere-from the earth to the oceans to the atmosphere-affecting
resource availability, evolution, and climate change. To learn more, go to
www.earthsciweek.org.
