Most of the phone manufactures lock the BIOS due to which you wont be

to install Ubuntu on it.
Only Google Nexus phones are currently available with unlocked BIOS and
hence can be used to install Ubuntu.
AFAIK, no dependence on BIOS or hardware as it uses the same kernel that
android uses - no worries about drivers too. Only user space changes. It is
more a choice of platform as far as I can see.
