Now regarding your installation - try out a text
mode installation
from an alterate cd. If you don't know what that is,

will show you how (assuming it is an i386)

Shouldn't we ask him first if Windows is running
properly on his system,then the problem is not
hardware.
Most probably he is having an AMD system with ATI
graphics.


Suse and Mandriva LiveCds should run on such systems.
Even Hard disk partitioning -the bugbear of all
newbies-is handled intelligently by these distros.

Text based installation is going to be a real
challenge for a newbie strait from Windows.
