Anyhow, I run several Opteron dual processor(250)and
Quad processor(848) systems in my lab and I haven't
experienced any troubling 'heat' problem. Few of the
boards run on the bench with just AMD supplied cpu
fans and they been up for several weeks as of this
writing.
Both dual and quad processor based linux servers
are real winners IMHO. Need a good power supply
and proper thermal ventilation. As SC commented
you need a quality power supply that will meet your
computer power requirements for your server including
pci(-x) cards. You get what you pay for wrt to
power supplies in the market.
AMD site has enough published data regarding this. My
experience so far with SUSE SLES 9 and RH AS 4 beta
are very positive.
Any how, what kind of meal you had in mind ?
Broiled prawn ? or micro Chicken Tikka ?
Either case, Opteron doesn't have
enough real estate with or without fan for that!
