Sorry to say but you are:

Knoppix 3.6 gave me a user name knoppix logged in to the system.

In the terminal i first typed an su and as there is no password set
for root in knoppix i immediately got the root prompt where i gave
knx-hdinstall to no avail.

Will try the new command today and report. Thanx all.

 

You must not use the Konsole found in the quick launch toolbar. 
Instead try pressing Ctrl+alt+F1 and you would get a root shell. there 
you can type knx2hd and you can install knoppix to your harddisk.
