Any one knows how to configure Sendmail ? My server company is saying that i
have
to add the ISP name in /etc folder to make it work but i am not sure

I could never get Gnus to work for me.
Everytime I try to make it work, I get lost in all the configuration
minutiae.
I guess mere mortals like me have to stick with VM, which unfortunately is
not
bundled with the standard GNU Emacs package. :)

No sane server will accept mails from unresolvable servers.
You will require a valid forward & reverse lookup if you need to send
mails to internet.

forward lookup is usually sufficient. this very mailing list does not have
reverse lookup on its server but it works. because of partly technical and
partly administrative reasons, many providers in this part of the world
are
not in a position to provide reverse lookup. also, you can send mail out
without working forward lookups also (at least for some time) using your
isp's
mail relay host. but what would be the point? if you dont have working
forward
lookup, people cant send mail to that address. why would you use a mail
address to which people cant reply (unless you are spamming)?

sriram, your point well taken. from the OP's post, I think it was
webmin that created the files. however, (if i am not mistaken) in this
case had the OP left out the trailing "." the server field, in the SOA,
would expand to linux05.pulsars.pulsars.lan. ($origin being
pulsars.lan.). from what I have read, the recommended method for the
server field: it should be a fqdn ending with a period.
call me old fashioned - for DNS I have always created zone files the
manual way.

alternative - postfix. It is sendmail compatible i.e. you don't have
to change other apps. that call sendmail. It's configuration is
simpler.
