Greetings!
I conducted an "Introduction to FLOSS" workshop today,
Monday, July 31, 2006 at MNM Jain Engineering College,
Thorappakkam, Tamil Nadu, India.
I would like to thank Prashant Mohan (ILUGC), Vidhya
Shankar (student), Assitant Professor Muthu Sundar
(Assistant Professor, CSE) for taking the initiative.
I discussed career opporunities with FLOSS, introduced
the GNU/Linux desktop, and played the movie, "The
Revolution OS".
IBM has started doing some good projects using
GNU/Linux with the college.

Prof. Muthu Sundar is already in touch with NRC-FOSS,
and is planning to get more students to do FLOSS

Hi,
I have a problem with compiling a module for 2.6 kernel. I did a simple
hello world module, compiled it and did an insmod, it is giving me an
error "No Module Object found" in dmesg.
previously i have compiled and installed a separate kernel (2.6.13.2)
for this. I compiled the module with the following options
-g -Wall -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -I/lib/modules/2.6.13.2/build/include -c .
i understand that this is an version dependency, but unable to find a
way to solve it.
am i missing something in the compilation or anywhere. could someone
help me out?

Many of which are good. I used to like the FAQ in
www.rsasecurity.com
Bear in mind that certain concepts like public key
cryptography take a *lot* of time to understand and
sink in.
Even "The Code Book" by Simon Singh is good.
For practical exposure to crypto I suggest you join
openssl-users@xxxxxxxxxxx and install and try out
www.openssl.org
This comes standard with all Unices these days.
You could also take a look at
www.openbsd.org once you get really hooked onto
crypto. They have a browseable CVS interface of the
entire source tree and you will find lot of treasures
there. Especially kernel crypto used for IPsec,
hardware engines and so on.
I think it is /usr/src/sys/crypto for crypto code.
And IPsec is under /usr/src/sys/netinet
But take one step at a time. It is a penance of
several years.

He's asking about network security - and while crypto is a useful thing
to know in that field, it is not the only thing around.
Read through the linux network administrators guide (NAG) - its
available online, as well as published by o'reilly.
That will do for a start .. and there are other resources you can read
once you have the basics in place.

It is a card that was bought from HP. It has a The Intel 82546EB Dual
Port Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
You can check for hardware problem by stressing the receive path of
the NIC. Only recv causes interrupts and NICs normally expose their
problem that way.
If the recv has an issue., then even the ping replies from the
cisco-router should get screwed. However., that does not happen.
Everything seems fine till the router. We are able to ping every other
NIC that is connected to the same switch.
However., I'm still waiting for the issue to occur so that I can grab a
tcpdump and see what is happening.
Anyway pls observe the problem for some time and theorize after you
have data. Observe tcpdump output for a while. What particular packet
exchange causes this behavior? Or is it after a certain period of
time?
Yeah. I'm not in the campus right now., so i'm talking with the admins
there to start tcpdump to log interesting traffic till the issue occurs.

Another thing - if that router is also the NAT gateway for your
office PCs, then see if you cant seperate your LAN gateway IP and
your mailserver IP .. you wont have junk traffic from your LAN [and
infected systems, older windows installs etc can generate a ton of
that], and this problem would be minimized even more.
The entire local network is behind the proxy-server shown in the diagram
(check http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/pipermail/ilugc/2006-July/027566.html).
The proxy-server has a Squid running on it for HTTP traffic., and is the
NAT gateway for SMTP, POP3, NNTP, XMPP and IRC. No local traffic comes
beyond the proxy-server.
