I think it is mostly because the websites are not up to date with the
research going on in the institute. I can talk only about Aero/IITB,
but what I have seen there is second to none. Remember our own LCA and
the missiles that keep launching themselves and the satellites and the
indigenously built passenger plane and so on? IITB's hands are behind

Binand - thanks for the information; yes, I have been aware of the work of
IITs in the projects you have named. And thanks also for the zeusnumerix
link - it was very encouraging to see the work being done there.
Please do understand that my contention was not that no research is
happening in IITs, just that it is far less than what I have seen abroad.
The difference is especially disproportionate in the IT and Telecom fields
- so many indians are in these fields but even the Dutch, Swedes, Finns
and the Norwegians with far fewer people are ahead of us in conducting
core research.
There could be many reasons for this - one important one being that
companies in India have not seen R&D as a core activity and are therefore
not willing to invest in either doing the research on their own or in
acquiring research from academic instituitions like IIT and IISc.
I am personally aware of this reluctance on the part of the industry -
ISRO has been trying to monetarize many cutting edge technologies without
much success. As a result of which, the culture of research even in
leading academic institutions in india is still nascent - especially
collaborative research when more than one person is involved.
