[Ilugc] better tool than 'iostat' for i/o analysis in linux - anyone?

Try kprobes.  kernel-src/Documentation/kprobes.txt should get you
started.

Not really. Kprobes has been around for a longer time and is pretty low 
level. If you want something similar, try systemtap.
