Wikipedia content easily runs into several terabytes
even if you want only the English version. And a DVD
can store only 4.7 GB. You can however choose a few
categories or leave out certain categories. Things
like American history and obscure religious stuff
might not interest many students.
If you want science, physics, math, computer science,
biology and current affairs, then you need to see how
big this will become.
I think for math, wolfram.com is much better than
wikipedia. I am no math geek but I think lot of
efforts have gone into it. It is also totally free.
As to the tech part, I think you can go in for on the
fly compression like liveCD and use something like
squashfs that compresses files in the best way.
Since your objective is a noble one I will gladly help
you out. Please contact me offlist and I will give you
exactly what you want. You may have to get me a DVD
burner though. I don't have one! :-)
