things got even easier in that gcc-3.3 and libstdc++3 are
now standard, making it easy to migrate to the 2.6.x kernels and also
compile stuff like mplayer and so on, which depend on gcc3.
Just an update: I upgraded to modutils-2.4.25-8 (google for the SRPM)
and built linux-2.6.8.1 on the upgraded RedHat 7.3+ system. Rebooted
into linux-2.6.8.1, and voila! *everything* works just fine. Well,
almost everything - cryptoloop is not on-disk compatible with the
patched cryptoloop on 2.4.x
X on this setup is startling when you're used to 2.4 - the mouse
pointer and the windows just glide effortlessly. I guess this is one
of the reasons that people feel that Gentoo is faster - with a 2.6
kernel, the UI is far more responsive than 2.4, which is the stock
kernel in RH 7.3, 8, 9 and FC1.
Also tested qemu-0.60 running Windows 98 SE (blasphemy!) in an emulated
x86 environment in this setup, and it was quite usable, at least for
playing Freecell.
My next project is to try to upgrade RedHat 6.2 to gcc-3.3 &
linux-2.6.x, while retaining glibc-2.1.3. A major challenge is to build
glibc-2.1.3 using gcc-3.3, and then bootstrap gcc-3.3. BTW, fixes for
correctly compiling linux 2.6.x with gcc-3.3 are still coming in (check
the Changelog for 2.6.8.1), but most of the miscompiles are in obscure
drivers. Gcc-3.4 and 3.5 also have miscompilation issues with linux-2.6.
Nothing to worry about for now, but I'll keep on the lookout for kernel
barfs.
