No, The STG people tell me that no prior experience is necessary for
taking the course.
True, most institutes "claim" that fact. But from what I've seen with a lot
of institutes (no idea about STG though), all they do is teach how to click
the "Next" button during installation screens, what needs to be entered into
the text-fields in redhat-config-*, and so on. A newbie would still remain
clueless about how things work (unless ofcourse he tries out everything on
his own way). Most institutes align their Linux training *only* to system
(and/or network) administration. They end up teaching Linux like they would
teach Novell Netware/UNIX/Windows NT administration. This might _not_ be
suitable for an enthusiast (who has no interest in becoming a sysadmin).
That apart, I was baffled to find a couple of RHCE zealots (in bangalore
atleast) who have no clue about how to add a new service onto a specific
runlevel, or how to survive without Gnome/KDE or how to write a 2 line
shell script even!
I guess people don't realise that they can learn Linux by themselves and
join these courses.
Yes, this makes perfect sense. Once people manage to learn Linux by
themselves, they would never need these courses anyways, unless they have a
pressing reason, or their company is paying for it ;-)
For the self-learning enthusiast types, google/tldp.org/LUG (as you
mentioned earlier) are the best bet!
