Tool of the Day: CFEngine
CFEngine is a popular open source configuration management
system, written by Mark Burgess. Its primary function is to provide
automated configuration and maintenance of large-scale computer systems,
including the unified management of servers, desktops, embedded networked
devices, mobile smartphones, and tablet computers.
Cfengine, or the configuration engine is an agent/software robot
and a very high level language for building expert systems to administrate
and configure large computer networks. Cfengine uses the idea of classes
and a primitive form of intelligence to define and automate the
configuration
and maintenance of system state, for small to huge configurations. Cfengine
is designed to be a part of a computer immune system.
Some features:
? System monitoring extensions, which extend the monitoring
capabilities of CFEngine 3
community to allow for defining custom monitors for any type of
information.
? Support for manipulating virtual machines on Xen, VMware ESX, and
KVM.
? Native Windows support
? Flexible searching of reports in a brand new scalable interface
that supports thousands
of hosts on a single hub.
? Mapping into a Graphical User Interface - for fancy commercial
upgrade paths.
? Role Based Access Control
? Support for Mission-Critical High Availability through a fully
redundant, lightweight
architecture for system information updating
