While I haven't used wvdial for long, the standard debian way of doing
ppp works wonderfully fine for me.
standard way = pppd? (am not familiar with debian) ppd is actually the
coolest way.
wvdial comes with some (really eyebrowe raising) TODO stuff like getting
the phone on speaker mode and then dialing in etc., pppd is truly hands
free...
I used to run 'sid' and now am
running unstable after managing to find the courage to download 400MB
of stuff for the upgradation.
Tata indicom is the best of all dialups, IMO. Absolutely very very
little downtime and very reliable. However, the speeds aren't the best
- ~7K/s (good enough for a dialup).
I have gotten upto 9K/s. Easy to carry your internet connection across
the city. Really good in terms of the technology if one is looking at
dialup kinda features.
I ran into trouble with their billing. Not that they billed extra. Their
schemes are not well planned (I can say this, esp as I footed fixed high
monthly charges). With my bill payment date at 21st of every month, the
service used to get disconnected on 6th and payment had to be made
immediately for restoration of services. Talk of downtime... well, this
is downtime too, isnt it?
cheers,
