[Ilugc] System not booting Debian as inittab is not found

hi all

1.When i boot my system in Debian,it says inittab not found.
2.It  then prompts for runlevel.I tried giving numbers from 0 to 6.
3.It diplays the info no more process resides. and it just stays there
without booting.
4.I tried copying the /etc/inittab file of FedoraCore to Debian,but not able
to boot.

what shud i do to boot up my system using Debian?
