I forgot to mention this before.
I could hear sounds before I started the whole process....

Hello,
I am using LinuxMintv2.1 (an Edgy based distro). My kernel is
2.6.17-10-generic.
On AMD Athlon64 3000+, Asus A8V-MX mobo (VIA K8M800 & VIA VT825 chipset).
Pythonv2.4 came with the distro. I installed python2.5 from Add/Remove
and tried removing python2.4 from Synaptic. I ignored the warning that
a lot of other packages will be removed. It seemed I had removed
everything, including Gaim, and many things were missing from the
Application and System menus. On restart it became worse, I was on
tty1 andd couldn't get into GUI mode.
From tty1, I did apt-get gnome and got my DE back. I had to do more
apt-get other applications. But I am not getting 2 things.
1) 'Open Terminal' on right click
2) Sound: actually my card (Realtek ALC 653, 6-ch Audio CODEC) was
detected but no sound came (checked for loose wire, muted volume,
under alsa-mixer etc). I tried to run a script for installing audio
drivers from the Linux Drivers given in my mobo CD (Asus A8V-MX). But
now even my sound card is not detected. And the /dev/dsp file is also
missing.
I checked with a Dapper LIveCD, sound was working.
