No I am not saying somethings wrong . The students did a great job , I
am just asking them to use FOSS galleries like gallery2 ,coppermine
etc.
can student afford for domain / hosting? if so, how much space?
Well google and yahoo might be the two big daddies in the web world .
I am afraid picasaweb is not that beautiful a web gallery as you
describe :P
Go have a look at the features[1] the gallery2 offer you will
understand what you are missing via picasaweb . Yes I morally loose
the right to ask because I am mailing via a "gmail id" I *will* be
moving on to my own mail id .. may be its right time .
for a normal student, i assume they just need some place where they can
share pics easily with their friends. it can also allow them to comment on
it. but with gallery2, one has to register or do lots of things. people may
not aware of the interface. may be, gallery2 can be for a pro photographer.
Lastly note that I am encouraging students to have their own self
hosted galleries which involves some work ,hence would be learning
something which I think is better thing to do than clicking upload in
picasa client ( which is one more proprietary solution from google )
will student be able to afford? that too in online? they need to have debit
card or credit card?

if you think that way, u cannot live in the world. then what abt hardware??
then what about the network servers, network devices?.....and so on....
