you may even try Network Information Service(Yellow Pages)
NIS is old technology. Unless it is well embedded into the
organization's IT infra, I would not recommend it for anyone
considering deploying directory services.
LDAP + Kerberos (optional) for Single Sign On (SSO), is the way to go.
(FWIW, MS ADS is basically LDAP+Kerberos+MS extensions to both).
