Is your switch/hub also having a  UPS ?

Yes. They are connected to a separate UPS. I disabled apm previously.
Now i have enabled it and did not encounter the problem.(In fact there
was no powerfailure after that ;-) ).

And today there was a power failure and the server did not hang. I think 
the problem before was that i disabled apmd. am I right?
