AFAIK, I used to *also* install the fonts in the OO.org font directory.
If you are using the x font server (xfs daemon) just restart xfs
If you are just defining font paths directly in XFree86.conf or
Xorg.conf, make sure the font directory where your ttf files are located
is defined in xorg.conf (if not - define it, and then run fc-cache to
update the fonts cache.
