If you don't know, what you are doing, then Rooting the device is not safe.
Rooting is not needed/worth:
1. For normal operation.
2. For application development
3. If you want to do OTA upgrades
4. If you don't want to loss vendor specific features (like HTC Sense)
OR applications (like Dialler)
Rooting is needed/worth:
1. To do something with Root Permission.
2. To play with different custom ROMs and don't worry about warranty
3. Upgrade the Android Orphans to newer versions.
4. To experiment Android Framework/System level programming
5. Some Telcos won't allow Tethering in default ROM, Rooting may be
needed to install Tethering feature.
6. To exploit the full capacity of the device, like running the CPU at
max frequency etc ..
7. Rearrange/Replace/Remove the applications.
8. Remove the access to particular hardware (like Camera, GPS, ..)
9. For fun :)
I run CyanogenMod on my Android Orphan (HTC Desire).
