I have heard that archlinux is fast and simple but unstable, any
comments on that?
(or may be on BSD based distros?)
I would recommend Lubuntu, the latest one. My brother uses it on a P4
machine with 512MB RAM. He is into animation so uses GUI all the time.
However, it is very stable.
