Don't think this is _very_ OT :)
We planned to use PHP for many things.
[...]
CGI support is not needed.
Suggest you ask for PHP and/or perl -- it's cheap, doesn't
add to the price of the package much, and you can do cool
things with it (like run your own slashcode clone! :-))
We wanna make our site hosted somewhere in India
In India: the better known names (Pugmarks, Net4Domains,
VSNL Co-hosted) cost a lot. For instance, a 100MB pack at
Net4Domains costs as much as 23.5k/year[1]. Pugmarks is
about as expensive [2]. Don't know about academic discounts
(which VSNL gives -- my college ran it's entire site off its
leased line, which VSNL gave at a (at the time) 50% discount,
IIRC).

on a Linux or BSD machine with a good uptime.
Uptime is important, but so's the bandwidth available
to that ISP.
Can anyone suggest me a good hosting company in India?
It all depends on your budget. Using the comparison shopper
at [3] I found [4].

I use Net4Domains personally, and while I wouldn't
*recommend* them, they're just about okay.
You can also have a look at WebSytz.com, which despite
the cheesy name performs pretty well (no, I don't get
money from them :)), or any of the sites returned
by hotpulse.com's comparison shopper.
If you have a slightly better budget, rackshack.com
(www.rackshack.com) can't be beat ($99/month for your
own server); or Netmar (www.netmar.com) ($49/month).
Btw, chennailug.org itself runs on a machine which
apparently is a very good deal, right?
Cheers
