FWIW, one of the companies that builds Simputers (Vinay Deshpande's
Encore Computers) is also behind the Mobilis design, and I wouldn't
be surprised if it shared a common platform with the Simputer - AFAIK,
Mobilis is not x86-based, and does not have a hard disk. It's more like
a mobile thin-client or POS-terminal, aimed at industry verticals like
logistics, freight/package handling, etc. It's not a general-purpose,
PC-architecture laptop.
If you want a general-purpose x86 laptop, there isn't a better deal than
the Acer Travelmate 2355 for Rs.27500 today - it's a very nice almost
fully-loaded 1.4 GHz Dothan Celeron M. If it's in a socket, there's no
reason it can't be upgraded to a Pentium M at 2 GHz or higher (the
Celeron M and the Pentium M are pin-compatible).
