Rs. 500 is approximately GBP 6.
From what I have seen in the UK, a 2Mbps ADSL link costs about GBP
25-30 per month. The business versions costs even more (you get IP
blocks - a /28 or a /27 depending on provider - etc.)
Most of Scandinavia, Korea and Japan have ADSL2+ services that
provide 20 Mbps at nominal rates (~ USD 20/month). There are
also fast-ethernet services that give you 50 - 100 Mbps
for slightly more money (say ~USD 40-50/month).
The technology to get to 8 Mbps is being deployed by BSNL, but
backbone capacity and tariffs may limit the speeds to 256 - 512 kbps.
It's mostly a market and pricing issue. Competition will drive
prices lower in the long run.
Meanwhile, 256 kbps for ~Rs.600/month (including modem rental) is
still a great improvement over dial-up - I'll heartily recommend it.
BTW, it works great with RP-PPPoE (userland PPPoE dialer) on Linux.
That's what I'm using now.
