This Sat I bought another LCD for Rs 350 from Omega 
electronics. The HD44780A00 chip is seen at the back of the 
LCD. Its a Solomon make.
But the problem with this one is that it doesn't have points 
to take wires out. There is a delicate connector and I have 
not been able to find a suitable ribbon for it.

I wish to showcase this in MIT LDD.

That's cheap. I got one for 1,600 about  2 years ago!! Try LCD4Linux. It is
easier to use than LCDProc as you do not have to write a client but can have
arbitrary text or command output also redirected to the LCD display apart
from bar charts.
