Folks,
As the title says, Linux-2.6.31 was released a few
hours ago. I downloaded the patchset and built it, and I
have a very good feeling about it - it's probably going to
be as legendary as 1.0.9, 1.2.13, 2.0.31, 2.4.13/21...
I'm still retaining my ancient Fedora Core 4 userland,
with gcc-4.0.2. Nevertheless, everything went smoothly,
and desktop responsivity seems to be a tad better than
2.6.24, my previous longtime favourite. Xine runs smoothly
without stuttering, even on battery with a tickless
kernel. Battery life seems to be as good as before,
so no compromises there. It's seems to be throttling
down more efficiently without giving up much on
performance.
There's lots of tracing and metering built into the
internals now, but I didn't config any of it. I'll play
with Btrfs and some of the Radeon stuff later, but
for now, the defaults just seem to work...
Highly recommended - give it a whirl. Mad props to
Linus and all the kernel developers - the best just
got even better.
