Its very important.
1. FLOSS is _not_ only for IT and CS students. It is
useful to all other departments.
2. EDA is inter-disciplinary for students coming from
CS/IT/EEE/ECE/ICE backgrounds. Honestly, they don't do
much inter-disciplinary work.
It really doesn't matter whether you are from x or y
department in most engineering colleges in India, as
they hardly learn anything in the first place. So this
will be a good example. Nobody said a student from
CS/IT shouldn't do VLSI in the industry, if he/she is
really interested. Unfortunately it is not flexible
here in India. But, it is very much possible in US
universities. Anyways.
When you come to the industry you only work on
specific domains - Embedded (firmware, device driver,
kernel development) or VLSI (verification,
validation).
Did you know that there are students with a CS
background who also do chip verification?
