is anyone able to use 2.6 kernel and have anyone tested the preemtive
nature of the kernel 2.6.
Please take care to use <CR> to break lines - don't rely on line wrap,
as it is painful to quote the original on followup.
Anyway, check my previous posting on the list - I have compiled and
am using kernel 2.6.8.1 (from kernel.org) with a heavily upgraded RedHat
7.3 install. However, the only thing you actually need to upgrade is
modutils.
When visited kernel.org I could download some
tar package I tried to apply patch, but in kernel compilation it is
giving error.
What error? You can download the full tarball, or just the patches
from 2.6.0->2.6.1->...2.6.8.1, starting with the 2.6.0 tarball. If
you went with the patches, did they apply cleanly? There should be
*no* rejects or warnings.
Is there any rpm package of 2.6 kernel source so that I
can freshly compile it and bott thru that kernel.
There are SRPMs for the 2.6 kernel, but these have heavy dependancies
on other RPMs in the specific distro they are meant for (e.g. SUSE Linux
9.1 Professional). I recommend that you stick with the kernel.org tarballs.
If anyone is using
2.6 kernel successfully please give me complete procedure to boot thru
that kernel.
Google is your friend. There is no change from kernel 2.4 except a
dependancy on a newer version of modutils - just about everything else
*just works*.
With 2.4 kernel I have written test program to test
preemtiveness OR non-preemtiveness nature of the kernel.One kernel 2.6
installed I can test that.
No need to test - the preemptible kernel and the O(1) scheduler, with
the interactiveness boost provided by the celebrated Molnar-Morton-Torvalds
"Combo Patch" work superbly. You will immediately notice the difference
in the way the mouse moves in X.
Here is an analogy that not everybody will relate to: it's like switching
from a Mercedes 300D (diesel) to a 300E (petrol). Both are built like
tanks and are rock-stable, but the 300E is very quick and nimble, can
turn on a dime, and is very easy to maintain on top of that. But the
steering wheel and controls are exactly in the same location.
