May be the X server config file has been modified in such a way that X
server cannot start.
try to find the XFree86.?.log log file and locate the problem, then fix
it, and for that time being disable
this line by prefix with # like this
# x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
to do a test cycle
1. check the log file
identify the problem, or send the portion to this news group at
least some one can guide you.
2. modify or remove unnecessary options
3. try startx
4. if that all goes well, then re-enable that line which starts X
