AFAIK no. Bash history is somewhat idiosynchratic.
It doesn't store all commands typed in all ptys...
That is strange. I have never encountered this
behaviour. Do you have
any reliable way of replicating this?
What I meant by idiosynchratic is that things don't
work as expected. At least what I expected...
Quite possible my expectations are not as things
should be.
Assuming that I have five ptys in an X session. I type
different commands in them. Now , I open a new xterm
and then press Control-R. What is supposed to happen?
I should be able to search for all the commands I
typed in the past , right?
This doesn't quite happen. I have not done extensive
research on this but I know several occassions in
which I have found one particularly long command
getting lost.
You see, I don't use history or reverse search much
but then I do get somewhat miffed at the fact that
when I need it it is not there.
If I were to design the history mechanism, I would
certainly have made history only time dependent. And
optionally pty or bash instance dependent.
In which case, if I press C-R at any terminal , new or
existing, I can thumb thro' all the previous commands.
This certainly doesn't happen.
This is what I meant.
Maybe I haven't done enough study or configuration.
But bash being so good in all other respects with the
POLA principle, I find this somewhat odd...
regards,
Girish
