Is it? Does that mean if I write a GPL software that uses quicksort I
have to state that the copyright of quicksort lies with the original
authors of quicksort? (whoever they may be...) It doesn't seem right

Algorithms by themselves are not copyrightable. A specific
implementation of the algorithm is but if the algorithm is restricted by
patents, applying GPL to a implementation in a region that enforces
software patents makes the software non-redistributable. Refer
