[Ilugc] Help : Linux/Unix - @ char problem in command line

Hi,
In Linux / unix, when I tried to type @ character, it is either
taking/consider as ^c OR backspace.
Say for example when I try to login to oracle using with @ char in it, I
am not able to able to.

Tried googling for help. Also, tried to set different terminal types like
export TERM=dtterm etc like stuffs. Nothing worked.

Any hints regarding this would help.
