I meant that I used GNU/Linux to install GNU/Hurd,
because before booting the CD, I mounted it and read
/hurd-doc/hurd-install-guide.txt by Neal H Walfield
It says
<quote>
The Debian GNU/Hurd distribution, unlike distributions of other
operating systems, does not have a nice installation program. One day
it will and maybe you will help design and implement it. However,
until then, installing GNU/Hurd requires that you install the base
system from another operating system, specifically, another Unix-like
system. Reports have come in that people have successfully installed
the Hurd from several different flavors of GNU/Linux and the BSDs. As
for other systems, it should not be a problem, that is, assuming it
provides a Unix-like environment. No matter how one approaches it, the
only Hurd distribution is based on Debian, as such, cross installing
from Debian GNU/Linux could make life a bit easier.

The file /README-or-FAIL says
<quote>
This CD set is a heavily modified Debian installation disc set which
will only install Hurd. The CD was produced with butchered debian-cd and
boot-floppies scripts. Most of the Debian documentation has been retained
which may be of use to people not used to Debian installations, but be
careful,
it has a Linux taste. All the Hurd .deb packages are included on the CDs and

I didn't boot the CD and follow the installation procedure.
I did what was told in the file /hurd-doc/hurd-install-guide.txt
Accordingly my /etc/fstab reads
/dev/hd0s8 / ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/hd0s5 none swap sw 0 0
But I still get an error. BTW /dev/hda5 is the
swap partition under Linux. I think that can be used
under Hurd also. Maybe I didn't create the devices
using MAKEDEV. I had no time to read the man pages.
Will try to take a try this weekend.

I never said so.

Thanks a lot. I will work out some way to get Woody.
