2. SORBS lists gmail's mail servers every time they notice a piece of
spam coming from gmail. The reason given is that gmail does not
include the originating IP address in the mail headers. Gmail's stance
is that including that information is akin to violating the privacy of
their client.
I, for one laud gmail's position. I have had several of these bounces
from gmail to ilugc now. One day it will be one too many, and I'll
just unsubscribe from the list.
i do not laud gmail's position - for one, it is inconsistent. there are
discussions of this gmail policy in many fora. it should be noted that
gmail hides the originating ip only for mail submitted via the web
interface but passes it along (as they should) for mail sent using mail
interface, for example. obviously, the privacy of originating ip is not
always protected. i do believe there is a workable solution - whitelisting
all the gmail outbound mail relays. i will try to get this done. that
should solve the problem without any policy changes.
