Subject: [FSFTN] Intro to Intro to GNU/Linux-Part-2

An enthusiastic crowd gathered on Sunday at IIT-M , CS-32 to attend the
secound part of the Intro to Intro to GNU/Linux series organized by FSFTN.
Some participants were present last Sunday too. They were joined by a new
batch of students from College of Engineering, Guindy. The session was
handled by Mr. Alagunambi Welkin and Mr. Pratheesh Prakash
The first part of the session was a hands-on approach to shell scripting.
Mr. Welkin introduced us to the basic concepts and let us explore. We
enjoyed modifying the comments and coming across a variety of errors. We
experimented further, under Mr. Welkin's guidance and were comfortable with
the basics of shell scripting. Materials used for this session can be

Mr. Pratheesh Prakash gave an overview of how to install softwares by
compiling from source. He mentioned the various reasons for using this
method to install softwares such as unavailability of softwares in
repository, to use the latest version and for fun. The hands-on for this
activity is to be held next Sunday
After this, there was a discussion of GLUG activities by students of
Pratyusha Engineering College and College of Engineering, Guindy,. The
participants came up with a plan of action which they intend to implement
this week
Next week, we will delve deeper into GNU/ Linux. The journey has been
enjoyable till now and I look forward to the next session
