[Ilugc] FreeBSD - how to set the environment variable?

Hi,
I am using FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE-p28.

I logged in using Telnet and changed user to "root".
I installed jdk and added "JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/diablo-jdk1.3.1" and
"export JAVA_HOME" to the file "/root/.profile"
After doing this, I logged out and then logged in using Telnet and
changed user to "root".
Then now, the environment variable set is not taking effect. I typed
"echo $JAVA_HOME"

I have only Telnet access to the computer. My aim is to set the
environment variable. How should I do it? Please help me in the above
issue.
