And one more thing, there is a situation where you *could* make money in a
write software release under GPL scenario,
- I go ask big client (like say a bank) about what software they
need.
- I* write a software
- I release it under GPL
- I am owner of the code
- I want to earn money based on this s/w (not by donations)
- and my core product in not the h/w on which this s/w runs
but the s/w itself
- I go charge money for the software. Since the program is
completely customized for the particular company, it shall be willing to
pay more. You give them the program under the terms of the GPL, ie. you
give them the source. The question of them redistributing it doesn't arise
because a) The program is customized for their needs. b) You've made
enough money off it through this one sale, so you don't really care.
Of course, if you didn't GPL it, you could charge money everytime their
system grew and they needed to make small changes to the software to
facilitate this. But that's what the GPL is about -- the rights of the
consumer. She's paid you for the program, now she should own it -
executable AND source.
