[Ilugc] Customizing Emacs21

I am using emacs21 in my debian sarge machine. I want to set
syntax-highlighting(global-font-lock) on always. I searched for .emacs
file but i could only find ~/.emacs.d/ folder which doesnt have any
files (except for auto-save-list folder). I tried creating init.el
file, but emacs didnt respond.
create it! emacs21 searches for ~/.emacs.elc, ~/.emacs.el and
~/.emacs; in that order...
fyi, emacs22 (yet to be released, still in cvs) searches for ~/.emacs*
, ~/.emacs.d/.emacs* and ~/.emacs.d/init.el(c). So, what you did would
have worked there.
