1. Directly interact with my ISP's SMTP server (I can't burden my laptop
with sendmail, exim, postfix, and so on).
2. Have inbuilt support for POP3/IMAP protocols (so I dont have to
configure/run fetchmail) and built-in *sane* editor/composer.
But I guess its a compromise
for not having to run MTA and fetchmail on my machine.
Thanks - this could be a good alternative for my setup. Configuring
elm and fetchmail is very easy, but the MTA (postfix + cyrus-sasl in
my case) is always tricky. My setup is also a dyndns.org setup with
postfix, cyrus-sasl, ddclient on my desktop/server, which sits on
an internal LAN behind a separate, standalone linux NAT/firewall/router
that connects to the WAN. Any change in my WAN transport layer (such as
a shift to another ISP or DSL service) is isolated to the linux router.
The original intent behind going with postfix was that I'd eventually
move the MTA portions into the firewall, leaving only the mail clients
on the other machines. But that idea is faulty, since the firewall is always
on and susceptible to power surges and so on. So it can't run a full-
featured distro, but only a minimal read-only root distro. That rules out
postfix and just about any other MTA on the firewall.
Also, I can replicate a firewall easily (it's a minimal router distro),
but MTA bring-up is hairy - so it's better left on my main desktop/server
machine.
Cone promises to be a reasonable alternative to the difficulties of
maintaining an MTA on the desktop machine, as this is a critical point
of failure.
